MOVE into the professional sphere.
What's in the course?
This comprehensive three-day course in London is a fast track to professional status. It explains in real detail how to create top-quality travel articles and get them published, through practical seminars, insider information and commercial advice. Because this lasts for three days, you will be learning in depth to swiftly improve your skills and understanding.
The course is taught by two editors from top magazines and newspapers, together offering the inside track on the commercial and creative issues involved in travel writing for both kinds of publication. Seminars are illustrated with samples of good work and explanations of what makes them work and sell. We also look at how to build a business and live the freelance writer's life.
Key content includes how structure travel features, what editors want and how to approach them, current trends, generating and pitching angles, how to describe places and people, writing with facts, and researching the market. There is an extended assignment to illustrate key principles. There will be some time available for one-to-one advice sessions with the course leader, where you can discuss your own past work and future plans.
Expert tutors
Jonathan Lorie is your course leader. Former editor of Traveller magazine, he offers the inside track on how magazines work and what their editors look for. He is also Britain's most experienced tutor in travel writing.
Jane Knight is the deputy travel editor of the Times. As our guest tutor, she gives the newspapers' view of how editors select articles, what they look for, and how to approach them successfully.
