ISTANBUL PHOTOGRAPHY WEEKEND
Expand your travel photography in this year's must-see destination
"I feel incredibly inspired – so wonderful to be around people with similar goals and passions." – Amanda
DISCOVER the city that everyone is talking about, an intoxicating blend of East and West, medieval and modern, of exquisite mosques and trendy restaurants, in the most dramatic harbour setting in Europe.
LEARN with the founder of Wanderlust magazine.
DEVELOP top-level photographic skills.
ENJOY an insider's view of a historic city, with a group of fellow spirits.
What's in the trip?
DAY 1 You can check in at our boutique hotel near the Topkapi Palace from
noon onwards, and spend solo time exploring the city. In the evening we
will meet for drinks and dinner in an atmospheric restaurant nearby – a
fun way to meet the group and enjoy delicious Turkish cuisine.
DAY 2 We begin with a location shoot inside the exquisite Blue Mosque, one of the few in the Islamic world that non-Muslims can enter, and then take a working wander through the picturesque backstreets towards the world-famous Aya Sofiya. Once the cathedral of the Byzantine emperors, its soaring dome became the inspiration for Islamic architecture the world over – and is an excellent challenge for modern-day photographers. Then it's back to base for an afternoon edit and critique session on what you've shot. This is followed by expert slideshows on related creative and technical issues, including how to photograph places and people. The day ends with dinner in a waterfront restaurant, overlooking the straits where Europe and Asia meet.
DAY 3 An early morning visit to the vibrant Covered Bazaar – the largest in the world – provides an extended shoot of people and city life. An intensive series of 20-minute 'challenges' is followed by lunch at your own leisure, and then an afternoon of feedback and illustrated lectures. These include a look at how to get your pictures published, and what editors want. At sunset we cross the historic Galata Bridge with its sweeping views over the whole seafront, and explore the sophisticated modern nightspots that reveal another side of Istanbul.
DAY 4 The focus today is on pulling together your shots to form a photo-essay on the city, for comment by the group. Finally we discuss what everyone has learnt and your next steps in travel photography.
Expert tuition is provided by three tutors. Lyn Hughes is the founder and editor-in-chief of Wanderlust, the UK's leading independent travel magazine. Steve Watkins is a photographer for the bestelling BBC book series Unforgettable Journeys To Make Before You Die, and camera columnist for Traveller magazine. Jonathan Lorie is the former editor of Traveller magazine, and director of Travellers' Tales. Between them, these tutors offer a wealth of inside information on the creative and commercial aspects of travel photography.
One-to-one advice sessions are not available during this course, but you are welcome to grab a tutor at any time to show them your past work or discuss your personal questions and plans.
You are free to attend
or miss whichever sessions you like, so you can relax
and wander the city as you want.
Add-on Istanbul course
Why not take the chance to develop your travel writing too? Our Istanbul Writing Holiday takes place just before this course, allowing you to do both for a whole week of creative discovery.
Based in the same hotel, we spend three days learning essential travel writing skills – but using other parts of the city to illustrate different skills and broaden your knowledge of the destination.
The Istanbul Writing Holiday finishes on Day 1 of the Istanbul Photography Weekend, so you can easily fit the two trips together.

Full joining instructions will be emailed to you 4 weeks before the course. We do not give out our venue names or details until after booking.
We ask you to book your own flights because this allows you maximum flexibility on dates, times and costs. Budget flights run on the relevant dates and cost around £90 return from London.
Direct flights are available on most days with the budget airlines (Easyjet, Pegasus) or with British Airways. On Day 1 you should aim to arrive on the afternoon or evening, which is when our accommodation starts. You can check in from noon, and we will meet informally with whoever is around for dinner that evening. If your flight gets in later, that's fine: the formal course starts next morning at 9 am sharp.
On Day 4 our course and accommodation end in the late morning, when you can depart. Extra nights should be booked direct with the venue. We can provide their contact details, on request, after you have booked onto the course.
